Open a duct in the middle of a run

Not a pro, so i'll probably use the wrong words, sorry.

We have a duct that runs for about 18 feet, starting at the furnace and leading to a room. It's about 8 inches in diameter, a straight shot with no branches.

I need to open the duct for cleanout purposes, but i can't get to the origin of the duct. I can see the duct is in sections held together with sheet metal screws. I removed some screws in an attempt to remove a section, but because of the way a tapered end fits into the back of the next section i can't remove a section intact.

Am i missing something? Can i cut into the duct to create an inspection hatch that would allow me to run a duct brush? If i did can i repair the opening so the duct is intact again?

Thanks

You don't need to take the duct apart.
