Dryer wall connection without vent box?

What is the best way to have a dryer vent connection in drywall without using a vent box?
Do I just fit a 90 degree bend in the wall?

The best way? If your dryer is on an exterior wall, the best way is to put the vent at the right height on your wall and go straight out, either direct or with minimal flex.

It should go between your floor joists, if possible.
