Replacing Ceiling Diffusers With Grilles - Impact on cooling
Hi
We have quite some ceiling diffusers in the house for our AC. We wanted to replace them with grilles primarily for aesthetic reasons if nothing else. We just wanted to confirm if these would be counterproductive in any ways in terms of cooling efficiency and ability? Most of the diffusers are say 2 way, 4 way or corner. Grilles probably look better but dont allow for air direction control.
Overall does anyone believe this would be highly negative thing to do? Can live with a little bit of minus but dont want to turn it upside down lol
Any advise would be greatly appreciated

Anything that has more surface area, like a grille vs a defuser, will provide more resistance and thus a bit less air flow.
One advantage is being able to adjust between rooms/floors, or even closing them completely, so that may actually make them more efficient to the rooms/area your using!

as you and Marq said, you will lose the ability to control flow directions and distribution by the directional diffusers. That may or may not significantly impact how well the system operates (for instance, I have a supply with a 2-way diffuser at one and of a long skinny room. If I replace it with a grill, I would lose a lot of airflow down the length of the room). So in that regard, its very system/room dependent.
I think you should be able to find specs for a grills open area. You want to make sure that's sufficient; if you reduce it too much from the original diffusers, you will put a lot of extra stress on the blower and shorten its life (along with getting poor performance)
