Bath Fan with incorrect Vent size

My Bath Fan has died, Checked power and its all good. Went and bought a nice new one. It has a 4 inch vent in the side, pretty standard I think, as I have replaced Bath Fans many times before. But when I removed my old bath fan, I found that it had a 6 inch Exhaust facing straight up and out the roof (Roof is about 1 foot above ceiling in that spot). What do I do about this? Can I just get a short 4 inch piece and try to aim it over to the inside of the 6 inch and use some tape to keep it there? Will it matter if it is sealed, since the hot air is going to rise anyway? Thanks!

Welcome to the forums.

Unusual to have a 6" vent line for a bath exhaust.
Possibly it was originally used for a kitchen exhaust.

You be best to get a 6" to 4" duct reducer.
