Maytag Neptune Washer (R11)

I bought my Neptune 3/7/98, today the spin cycle stoped. Reading the postings I have looked at R11 and it is burnt.

What all should be replaced?

Since the washer is 5+ years old what would be the best plan of attack?

Call Maytag.
Go to the local appliance store to get the complete replacement parts.
Oder the parts from a electronic shop.
Go to Radio Shack to get parts.

Thanks

Hi,

Call Maytag!
Manufacture phone#'s...
Esp if your washer hasn't had the PH enhanement...this is a free kit which comes with a new control board ( the part with the R11 is burnt )....the wax motor or entire lock assy is/has to be changed at the same time!...but the wax motor/lock assy is not part of the PH kit.

Door lock assy.

Do I just ask for the PH enhancement or tell them about R11?

I will place the order for the wax motor and the dock lock assembly.

Thanks again.

If your washer has not had this undate done in the past...don't mention the R11, mention you see and have mold

Maytag will usually take it from there.

I will place the order for the wax motor and the dock lock assembly
Either or...both is not required...the whole assy is my choice for long term reliablilty...just the wax motor is cheaper.

Jeff's right on the money (as usual).
The primary problem is a failure of the wax motor in the door latch. It "POOF"s R11 and Q6 on the controller board.
You will obviously need to replace the wax motor, either as an individual component, or the whole latch assembly.

The board will either need to be repaired or replaced. As Jeff pointed out, Maytag offers a free upgrade kit to address a problem with mold growing in and around the rubber boot around the drum at the door, which happens to have a new controller board in the kit.

Pop open the door to your Neptune, grab a flashlight, and look about in the fold of the rubber boot inside the door, at the outer edge of the drum. Be gentle with the soft rubber. Look for mold, mildew, goo, or icky yuck. And before you ask, yes, Jeff, that's the proper technical term.

Call Maytag at 1-888-4-maytag, and tell 'em your Neptune has mold in the doorway, and smells mildew-ish.
Have your model and serial numbers handy - they should take care of you. You don't have to mention the wax motor, or R11. Probably shouldn't, actually. This should get you a new front boot, a new inner door shell, and a new CONTROLLER BOARD.

Like mentioned before, you'll still need a wax motor, because the one you have now will just take out the new board if you try it.

Good luck, and please let us know how you make out.

I made the call to Maytag. After waiting an hour on the phone the operator said I qualify for the PH enhancement. She arranged the shipping and called the local service for the install, all covered by Maytag. May take up to 3 weeks.

I have place an oder for the latch assembly and it should be here 7/9/03.

Thanks again

Would a certified Maytag service person have known about this PHA enhancement upgrade?? My concerns are about the same as many others with regards to this machine. It is 5 yrs old with minimal use. I call a tech in to have a look at the no spin issue, and he quickly finds the problem that the board and lock assembly have to be replaced. If all the parts can be received for free by calling Maytag and complaing about mildew on the boot, I would have thought a tech who works on appliances everyday would have known. He also mentioned that he has seen this problem before and that he has changed numerous boots before. Am I little paranoid that the tech was trying to take me for a ride ???

Hello Reeegs,

Would a certified Maytag service person have known about this PHA enhancement upgrade??
Normally yes.

If all the parts can be received for free by calling Maytag and complaing about mildew on the boot
Not all.....the door lock assy or the wax motor ( seperate from the lock assy ) needs to ordered seperatly as it does not come with the PHA kit.

Am I little paranoid that the tech was trying to take me for a ride ???
Probably neither.

I will tell you from personal experience....the PHA kit is free to you....the tech gets paid from Maytag, which is a LOT less than we would make from a private service call.....sitting on hold with Maytag can waste a lot of valuable service time for the tech, that is why I often let the cust call ( once I have explained to them the in's and outs of the PHA kit ) and I'll be at my next call while the cust is still on the phone with Maytag, this way my day isn't held up too long. *Not saying you did*...I have had customers just beek off at me the entire time that I am there, think I'll go out of my way to help some by telling them about the kit?, not likely! When someone treats me decently and doesn't rag on me about "how much they paid for the washer", "you service people are crooks", "the washer should have lasted longer", ect, ect, ect...if treated decently, I'll bend over backwards to help them out!

JMO!!

Call Maytag yourself to see if they will help

Maytag 1-800-688-9900 USA
Maytag 1-800-688-2002 Canada

....all they can say if no

jeff1,
Thanks for the speedy reply. I have spoken to Maytag and they are going to send the PHA kit to the Appliance repair company I dealt with. They are also going to throw in the wax moter for the door latch assembly. I failed to mention that the tech was looking for $500.00 plus taxes to do the repair. I then went looking for answers here and all over the internet to find that there are numerous people with the same problem. The tech was willing to do the work, but in fact he recommended that I buy a new machine, cut my losses, and he was willing to take away my Maytag and no cost so he could use it for parts. I would think he takes it to his shop call Maytag gets the parts, fixes the problem, and resells the machine. Sound like a plan, or am I out in left field ???
Later...

I see!!

Unfortunately that does smell a little fishy!! <img src="http://w1.511.telia.com/~u51102888/anims/animal2/fish2.gif">

I have spoken to Maytag and they are going to send the PHA kit to the Appliance repair company I dealt with.
If you are uncomfortable in dealing with them again...Maytag can probably suggest another company!??!

I think it is a little to late. Maytag already put in a work order with this tech. I will let you know what happens. I feel like asking this fine gentleman all the questions I asked you and see if he turns a few different shades of red. I already gave him $46.00 for his first 1/5 hr. visit. I think I am going turn the screws on him a little a see what happens. I will let you know the results. It won't be for a few weeks as I will be going away on vacation tomorrow.
Thanks again for your help...

all customers are now being sent a customer for life survery and if they still have mold issues the kit will be sent and installed. that is the latest .if the kit was installed, then a obpa boot will be sent and to wipe the boot dry after the last load and to freshen up the tub with some bleach and a dishwasher detergent like sun light etc.

the latest mold reisitant boot is named the obpa boot, 22003660, I said the same thing. if you have a pha kit and the boot is still moldy, then the obpa boot goes on. I have put a few of them on and told cust to wipe the boot dry after the last load.

Question Maytag was no helpq

Hi guys
been reading the notes and wanted to thank for all the good 411
Here is the problem now. I called Maytag and told them about the mold issue. So they said clean it up!! I told them about the kit, and he said change the boot (which is no longer a kit or free) for $45. I said what about the ph enhancement control board, and he said it is not part of a kit, and costs 210 (part 22002989)
So no luck plucking a hair from the bear So I know that the wax motor has to be changed. That has burnt the r11 and q6. I could change it, but because its burnt, I can't see the color code on the r11 or the q6. Does anyone know the code for these items? Alternatively, does anyone know where I could get my hands on the schematics of the board? I really hope someone could get back to me ASAP
thanks
Michael

For your mold problem: Run an empty "heavy" load with a 1/4 cup of liquid bleach (put it in with the soap) and a scoop of dishwasher soap, be sure to wash down the soap dispensor too. When you are done, leave the bleach dispensor door open when the washer is not in use. You will probably need to do this about every 6 months to keep the mold completely away.

Q6 is a Phillips MAC97A6 400 VAC triac, I replace them with ST Micro Z00607ma 600 VAC triacs. R11 is 3.9 K ohm. The copper is very light on this board, be careful.
