How to take the top off of a washing machine?

I have a Maytag washer that is 15 years old Model LA283, top load. This morning after doing a load of laundry, there was water on the floor surrounding it. I looked at all the water connections and drain hose and there is no water from any of those. It has to be coming from inside the washer somehow. How do I get the lid/top off?

I see that there are 2 clips in the back, I pry on them and try to push the top forward a bit so to lift it up, as I am told that it should lift up.
I get no where with it, maybe I am not strong enough?
I want to see if there are connections inside that have gotten loose or need replacing.

Can anyone offer suggestions as to how exactly I can get the top off?
