Refrig/Freezer heating element

I got a Maytag 2454 Refrig/Freezer why is there a heating element

Why is their a heating element in the bottom portion of my freezer. Didnt notice it untill today when I heard water sizzling on it.

The heating element is there to defrost the coils.

i did alittle more research and it appears this is also used to keep the refrig frost free. Hmmm is there a problem??

Same thing as defrost coils. Keeps the refrig frost free. No problem. How it is suppose to work.
