washing machine problem

The washer locked up and you can spin it freehand both ways, you turn it on and it locks up. The pump works and the water drains. This is a whirlpool. There is only one pump and one motor and no belt that we can find. Could it be the motor, the magnetic starter ? Do you have any ideas?

Hello,
when you turn the machine on and after it fills do you hear a humming noise as if motor might be running,
sounds as if the motor coupler may be broken you described a direct drive unit it does not have a belt.

you access this washer by taking off the cabinet.

how far do you have this taken apart.?

Hi,

My husband turned the washer upside down and could physically see the coupler. It is in one piece. With little effort, can turn tub freely. After it is turned on it locks up tight, with a small clunk inside of what appears to be a gear box or transmission.

Could it possibly be the gear box?

Thank you
