Oil Stains from washing machine?

We have an Amana extra large capacity washing machine that is 11 years old.

We have been noticing grayish/brownish/greenish stains on our whites. Is this what oil stains look like?

We were told a possibility is oil stains from the agitator (?).

My husband said washing machines are expensive, but not as expensive as a new wardrobe!

TIA!

Hello: SusieQT

Most likely there is a worn and leaking seal beneath the agitator. The top of the agitator is the cap which can be removed. Inspect the area beneath it. To access the seal the entire tub has to be removed. Each machine differs on how this it done.

Read the manufacturers online web site for problem possibilities, solving methods, disassembly, reassembly methods, repair procedures, pictorials, downloadable repair manuals, etc which may be available online.

Search the manufacturers web site for a downloadable version of the owners or service manual. The file will be a pdf file opened with Adobe, which also needs to be downloaded first but worth having once obtained.

Retail appliance parts dealers can also help determine what the possible problem may be. Bring the make, model and serial numbers. Appliance part stores and dealers are listed in the phone book

Thanks for the reply.

Is this likely what is causing the staining? Are there other possibilities?

How long should a washer of this make/era last?

Thanks.

Hi: SusieQT

First, what I left out of the first reply is to remove the agitator cap and than pull up on it and remove it from the center drive spindle. Once it is removed the seal, etc can be seen and possibly gain access to it. Possibly but not always.

Other Causes Possible:
Cleaning may help all the exposed parts may help. May have had a prior greasy item washed which left behind the grease or whatever is causing the current problem.

How long a machine or any of it's parts lasts, has far too many variablies. All based on usages, how built and maintainence. Hard to say for sure. May last you 6 years, others 10+...????

Each machine differs. How to access the seal on that specific machine is not know for sure. May have to remove much more than just the agitator top side. Likely from beneath the machine.

Read the manufacturers online web site for problem possibilities, solving methods, disassembly, reassembly methods, repair procedures, pictorials, downloadable repair manuals, etc which may be available online.
