Unhappy Maytag Washer Squeeks on Spin Cycle

Just bought a used washer and dryer. The washer squeaks badly when it starts the spin cycle.

Once it gets going it is ok.

Is it just a belt or worse?

Hi Barry (Or),
welcome to DIY Forums. - to investigate this, youll have to pull the cabinet or at least the front, off. There should be two screws low down on the front panel, undo them and tilt bottom of the front panel out, it's clip fitted at the top. The tub is mounted on top of a rubber pad and will have 3-4 centering springs give all of this including pad, a good spray of silicon grease. ( available most hardware stores.)
That should do it, post back and let us know.

Do it Right - Do it Once.

Greased, still squeaking. Drive belt?

I greased everything I could see to do around the pad at the top and the shaft.

It sounds like it is coming from the bottom of the washer by the belts. Could it be the drive belt? It has a crack in it.

Thanks again.

Yes, -that would possibly do it. Any belts with apparent damage should be changed and tensioned properly.

Talking Thanks for the help! It was the belt.

It was the drive belt. It had a crack and was slipping because it was shinny.

The crack was also making the dryer shake during the spin cycle. It is much smoother now.

Thanks!
