Amana Dryer - Electric Hum, no spin

Last night, my 4 year old Amana "Electronic Precision" dryer (ALE956EAW) was working fine. I opened the door to remove some clothing while the unit was running. When I reclosed the door and pressed the Start button to continue the drying, the dryer did not start, but only made a constant electric humming sound (no spinning or heat). The digital display panel looked normal -- no unusual codes or messages.

I tried cancelling and starting a new drying cycle, but upon pushing "Start" I only get the same hum. Pushing "Stop/Cancel" stops the hum with a "click!"

Tried unplugging, waiting, replugging, etc. Tried waiting overnight to allow cooling; still same results. Tried "No Heat" cycle; same result--loud electric humming.

The drum spins when pushed by hand (it's not stuck or anything).

Any ideas?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

-Mike

Hi Mike,
-remove the front or top panel and check for broken belt first. If it is broken take it to appliance store to check against new one. Post back and we'll go on to fitting it or other problems if belt is good.

Amana Dryer - Humm, but no spin

I was able to partially lift the top panel of the dryer after loosening screws on the back that hold two securing brackets; the top is still attached in the front somehow. I don't see screws that I could possibly get to there.

From the top, I can see the belt around the drum and it seems fine; it is positioned correctly and is taut so I'm pretty sure that the belt is not broken. However I can't actually see the motor and pulley beneath the drum.

The sides and back of the dryer are all one piece. Should I unscrew everything and pull all that off?

Thanks.

Hi Mike,
- next you should test the motor. If there's no panel at the back, then take off the front. Start with the 2 holding screws at base of front, then pull the panel down and away. Next, should be the front bulkhead with four screws. You may have to remove the drum to get at the motor. if you start with this, I'll come back inthe morning with instructions on testing the motor.
