Whirlpool Dryer not staying on
#1

Problem I am having is that I can push the button to turn on the dryer but it will only stay on for about 10-15 seconds. I have to wait about 20 minutes before it will come on again but will only come on for 10-25 seconds again.

Hi techgirl,
- I think John hit the nail on the head. Whirlpool/Kenmore dryers have a lot of problems with door latch switches. Without model# I can't go into detail, but look at the latch, check for loose/burnt wires, and remove and test it if possible.
Do it Right - Do it once.

I've worked on a lot of Whirlpool dryers. I'm not so sure about the door switch. If you have to wait 20 minutes before you can turn it on again it sounds like your motor winding thermal protection. When the copper windings heat up it's a little thermostat that automatically opens the circuit. The motor will not work until the windings cool down, hence the wait. I think that if the door switch was screwing up then sometimes the dryer wouldn't even start up. Anyway, there's a chance that something is jamming up the drum and making the motor work too hard, because these motors usually last more than to years, and often as long as 20. With the machine off reach inside the dryer and turn it clockwise only (counter-clockwise on Whirlpools makes the belt slip off the idler pulley. The drum will feel a little sluggish, that's normal. But if the drum turns really, really hard that might be your problem. Or if it rattles or scrapes really loud while you're running. That could be a defective idler pully (loud rattle), or a blown or misaligned felt bearing (scraping or drup turning really really hard.)
