Top Of GE Dryer Gets Extremely Hot

I have a GE Electric dryer about 3 years old...When drying a full load of clothes the top of the dryer becomes extremely hot to the touch, however if I am drying just a partial load of clothes the dryer runs fine and does not get hot on the top...I have cleaned all the lint from the dryer and the vent. Is there some type of sensor that is causing the dryer to overheat with a full load of clothes that I may need to replace? Thanks for any help.
