Dishwasher odor

When my dishwasher is not used for several days, the inside of the machine develops a nasty odor, even if there are no dirty dishes in there. I have looked for garbage trapped in the screen. What else should I be checking?

Is there water left in the DW after the cycles end? Is the discharge hose connected before or AFTER the trap on the sink? Just a couple things that could cause this. Good luck.
