Whirlpool washer stops @ drain cycle

Last night we're doing laundry and the washer stops after it agitates (just before the drain cycle). So I dig up some troubleshooting online and one of the suggestions is that the drain pipe is clogged.

So I go to the washer, pull the pipe out of the wall and move it around a bit. I can't see to the bottom because it's black and dark in the basement so I put it back in the wall and pushed the knob in and it started right up. It happened again in the same load.

Today, my husband is home and having the same issue.

I can take the pipe off from the machine to see if it's clogged - but any other ideas?

and at what point do I call for service? sounds expensive

Thanks.

A clogged drain would keep the washer from draining.
But if the washer is just stopping and not going into
spin at all then you have an issue with the washer itself.

Turn the timer to its final spin on the regular wash
cycle with the lid closed. When you pull the knob out
on the timer to turn it on does the washer start?

"no, but it sounds like the motor is humming."

Is this a fairly loud humm comming from the lower part of
the washer?
Does the humming stop if you lift the lid on the washer?

no its not a loud humm - it sounds like its coming from the timer more than the motor - I mis spoke.
