Lost agitation in washer

Lost agitation in washer

At the end of the pre-wash cycle, I heard this strange rattling sound. It sounded like a chain slipping. I do heard a motor running. The timer is working. It fills and empties. However, the machine NEITHER agitates nor spins.

Before I tip the thing over to check out the motor, I'd appreciate a few opinions on whether some replaceable part broke, or if I now have a giant planter on my second floor.

Oh, it's a Kenmore Ultra-Fabric, at least five years old.

[I also ripped a decorative part of the body of my car off, have a hole in the windshield - at least it hasn't cracked - and the vet says I have to come in for a conference about the dog's x-rays. This just is not a good day.]

Thank you very much; I've been researching new washers, and fixing this one is sounding more and more attractive.
