Angry Noticing rust spots on clothes from washing machine

In the last month, I have found several rust spots showing up on our white clothes. I just inspected the inside of the washer, and it looks like something has chipped the porcelain in a couple of places, and I do see very tiny areas that appear to be rust. Is there any fix for this? Or does this mean it's time for a new washer? This machine is a Whirlpool '98 model, and works great other than this recently discovered problem. I just can't keep having our clothes ruined. :-(

You can touch up chipped areas with appliance touch up paint. There are laundry rust and iron remover products available in the laundry aisle.

The only way to fix the problem is to replace the inner basket which can be a costly repair especially if you have a tech come to your home to fix it. I have tried using touch up paint but it wears off within a few loads of laundry. Chances are, there is rust forming on the back side of the basket as well. There really isn't too much involved in changing the basket itself. However, a specail tool is needed to remove the nut that holds the basket in place.

Well I went the rust-remover (used Lime Away - don't know that it worked that great) and appliance paint route. I know it will be only a temporary fix...don't see the point in replacing the basket for a couple hundred at this point. I'll start looking at new ones...darn it.

It's always something isn't it. Sheesh.
