Kenmore 110 agitator question
Hello All,
I have a Kenmore 110 top loader washing machine. It has a two part agitator. The bottom seems to spin fine. The top does a following motion. The top part spins easily in either direction. I popped the top inspection cover and see a ratchetting system. The system does not seem to do much, with three arms that come out but don't grab anything or prevent the unit from only turning in one direction. I see no broken pieces of plastic. The machine does agitate and the top portion does follow around slowly, although we have been careful not to fill the machine to the top with clothes. My question is whether or not the upper agitator should spin freely and if the ratchetting system is toast, any removal and replacement info would be helpful.
Thanks, Jimmy

Hi jim:
With the machine off, by hand the top of the agaitator should spin freely in one direction and catch in the other. It sounds like you need to replace the ratcheting system. It's an easy and inexpensive DIY repair. When you look up the parts, you'll see that that you can buy just the dogs or a complete kit. Get the kit. There's repair info here:
http://www.applianceaid.com/direct.html
You can look up the parts here:
http://www3.sears.com/
You'll notice that there will be a Sears # and another number in parentheses. The number in parentheses is the Whirlpool part #, so you can buy from Sears or search other websites using the WP #. For example, you can search by part # here:

Let us know how you make out. Thanks.

All,
Sorry about the slow response to this thread. I bought the parts and replaced the dogs in the ratcheting system. It was an easy, cheap, and effective repair. Thanks, Jimmy
