Maytag washer running all night
Is my washer on its way out? Or is my guess below correct?
Maytag A107SA, with rotary knob, 1970s maybe early 80s vintage
My wife put a load in the washer at 10 PM. I heard it agitating when I went to bed shortly after. When I woke up at 6 AM I heard the washer running. My wife was in bed, so I didn't figure she'd put another load in. I checked the washer. The clothes were dry and there was a lot of lint on top of the agitator, so it appeared it was running all night on agitate but had never filled with water. No loud noises, burned belt smell or other indications of trouble.
I looked at the rotary knob and noticed that the 12 o'clock pointer was between "return suds" the "10" on the regular cycle. So I had to guess that she didn't turn the knob far enough and it was stuck all night on that spot in the cycle.
Since then I have done two more loads and all was fine.

While all is good.......Locate a timer assembly. Trying to "Hunt " it down when you need it will be less than a picnic.
You probably have a dead spot in the timer, which may or may not fail again.
