whirlpool washer won't agitate, spin-drains ok

You all were great helping me with my dryer -- I am hoping you can do it again for my whirlpool washer 110.92591200 -- it will not agitate or spin. It fills and drains ok. It makes the same noise as when it is working, but nothing moves.

I read the other threads so I removed the agitator, and tried it again-- no luck. The vertical shaft with ridges (that sticks up for the agitator to sit on) did not move at all. And none of the parts below it moved.

I don't think it is the lid switch. When I put it on drain/spin, it does nothing until it's pressed, then it drains, and makes a continuous noise (like it usually does), but does not move.

I read one thread that talked about the motor coupling. How can I tell if that is the problem? Is there a way I can test that so I don't waste time replacing it when it is not the problem?

Thanks again.

Here is a link to what I think your problem is
http://repair2000.com/coupling.html
The only thing I do different is not to take cabinet off, I pull the machine out from wall far enough to lean it back on hoses(far enough to lean back by it's self) and work under machine. Water pump can stay on hoses and push to the left and fold hoses to stay out of way. when you reinstall motor be sure to take extra care on the way the pins line up to the holes in the rubber piece. Lots of practice takes me about 15 minutes but know every tool I will need. Give about a hour for job.

Thank you -- the link was very clear. I removed the cabinet -- and bingo! the black pieces of the coupling were scattered all over. That is clearly the problem (hopefully the only one).

Thank you for your quick response. Doityourself is GREAT!

The washer is working now. In case anyone has the same repair, I want to add my experience. The link directions are very clear, but I had a real problem getting the motor to seat properly. So here are my additions -- when you do the repair, they will make sense to you.

1. Attaching the two white plastic pieces to the spindles were much harder, and required a lot of careful tapping. I finally used silicone spray to help the process.
2. Put the rubber coupling onto the white plastic attached to the bottom of the agitator mechanism, with one of the empty black holes pointing down. Now you are ready to put the motor back in position. Have the top motor clip ready.
3. Put the 4 rubber spacers back on the motor's prongs.
4. Angle the motor so the lower two rubber spacers are in the right position, resting the bottom of the motor front edge on the floor. (If you do that, then when you tip up the motor, the top two spacers will fit as well. And you do not have to try to hold the heavy motor while you work.)
5. Then with the motor still resting on an angle, reach in between the coupling pieces and feel with your fingers to confirm that the empty black rubber hole is still down.
6. Move the white plastic coupling part attached to the motor until one of the prongs is also at the bottom and lined up with the black hole.
7. Then try tipping the motor up.

Repeat 6 and 7 until it slips in. It may take several tries, but when it works, the prong will slip in easily and you can tip the whole motor up until all of the prongs are engaged, and all the rubber spacers are in the right position.

Then just attach the top clip to hold the motor in place while you complete the repair.

Hope these steps make your repair go faster.

And thanks again, pugsi.

Your right lining up the pins is the hardest part of job. you hit it on the head as the way I do it.
