Kenmore washer spins BUT not fast enough
Kenmore direct drive washer spins but very weakly. I can stop the drum easily with my hand. Transmission? Probably. Anything to do short of major replacement of transmission?
Thanks, Bob Ritter.

need model # to see what machine you have but sounds like the gearcase is leaking oil up into clutch, You will need a gearcase clutch and I would replace drive coupler while tou are there. To check tilt machine back to wall and look under machine on sides of cabinet and see if there is a streak of oil. post reply so we can know what you did. Don;t know age of machine but I would recommend repair, You can get rebuilt gearcase and about a hour should fix it.

Thanks pugsl - Mod 110.24722300 Type 111 - Kenmore 70 Series. I'll be tied up until Thur. I'll look into it then. About how much for a rebuilt gearcase? The machine seems in excellent condition, not sure the age.

here is a link to your machine

look under brake, clutch and gearcase you will need 5,9,13 or if you want look under gearcase and get seal. I still would replace 5 and 13. I think they are only listing new ones you can call and find out or call a local appliance shop, Very common parts should be on the shelf. I always replace gearcase.

I'm back. Been at the hospital with my wife, kemo.
There is definitly an oil leak. Spray on the inside of the box and even a drop or two on the bottom of the gearbox. I know it's best to replace 5 and 13 but money is really tight so can I get by with just the seal? Can oil leaked on the clutch be cleaned? Thanks, Bob Ritter

I guess you can just replace the seal, use a good brake cleaner from auto parts store to clean clutch, It will probably work. Clutch is slipping because oil is in it.

Thanks! I'll give it a try. This washer (and dryer) appear to be in very good shape, no rust, dings etc. and very clean. I only paid $65 for both at a garage sale, they're for my elderly sister in law. She lives alone and does very little laundry and I'm hoping that these will do her for a good long time. I'll post results when I'm finished. Thanks muchly, Bob Ritter

Thanks pugsl - Got the seal, $6.80, put it in and walaa!! it's like new. It took a couple hours but next time it'll only take 1. The only thing that got me for a bit was the little wire ring that holds the clutch on the shaft. Fought it for an hour then made a "special tool" and snapped it in in about 5 seconds. Anyway thanks again and God bless. Bob Ritter
