LG 1814 washer won't spin

Hi, I have an LG 1814 front-loading washer.

When I run it, the cycle starts normally -- water comes in and it agitates a bit, but when it needs to spin faster, it doesn't move. It makes a sort of screeching, grinding noise. So it sounds to me like there is a mechanical problem -- maybe a broken rotor bolt? I want to take it apart and check it out.

However, for spin problems my service guide says to first check the frequency of the water level. This is done by entering diagnostic mode by pressing the spin speed and soil level buttons simultaneously. And when I do this, nothing happens. It has power but won't enter diagnostic mode.

Any ideas why this would happen, or what I should do first?

Thanks!
Sandy

1st does the drum turn by hand? When you push the 2 buttons you also have to push the power button. All at the same time. Start button will advance machine each cycle every time button is pushed. Keep us posted on what you find.

You are right -- I do need to push power with the other two buttons. Which is what "step 2" of the instructions says... guess I should read over everything again. Thanks!

Okay, so now diagnostic mode works. Here's the status:

* Clock-wise tumble, low-speed spin and high-speed spin do not work.

* Counter-clockwise tumble works, but the machine makes and unusual r-r-r sort of growl when it does.

* All other cycles seem to work as normal.

Does this help narrow down the problem?

noisy only when powered

It doesn't make a sound when I spin it by hand, only when it's running.
