Kenmore side by side not making ice

I have a 18-year-old Kenmore side by side that is not making ice.

We have recently had some contractors doing a bathroom refurb and I figured they got some junk in the water lines, so I pulled the supply line off of the rear of the fridge. Water was present so I removed the icemaker from the fridge.

I found that the metal tube that drops the water into the icemaker was frozen solid. I heated it up enough to remove all of the ice built up inside of the tube. Turned the fridge back on, but no ice.

The next day I found that the cold water supply line under the fridge in the basement had collected quite a bit of water in the foam insulation sleeve I have around it (originally installed to prevent any condensation from dripping on ceiling tiles).

Only other thing of note is that I found some discolored ice (black) in the ice collector and inside the freezer.

Any thoughts?

 

Check to see if there is any ice in the ice maker cavity, and if not raise the arm to turn off the ice maker. Fill the cavity with water using a cup or glass. Leave the ice maker off for 3 hours, then lower the arm and see if it dumps the ice out. If it does freeze and dump the ice, then your water supply is probably the problem.

The ice maker itself works fine. The metal tube that enters the freezer to allow water into the ice maker keeps freezing up solid.

I have defrosted the freezer a couple of times hoping to alleviate the problem but no dice (or ice).

 

You need to remove the metal tube from the back of the refrigerator and clean all of the ice out. Then replace the water valve because that is what causes this problem. The tube being stopped up will also cause the refrigerator to leak possibly causing the line on the back of the refrigerator to blow off. For more on this visit Icemaker Repair Guide
