I am having problems with my LG 1814 front-loading washer.
When I run the test mode, it will not tumble clockwise or do low or high speed spin. There is a sound like metal rubbing on metal, as if it is trying to turn and can't. It will tumble counterclockwise but makes a r-r-r sound.
I tried running a load with nothing in it. I got the LE "locked motor" error. Some internet research told me this is commonly due to a problem with the hall effect sensor, which typically has problems due to too much detergent and suds.
The weird thing is when I started to go into diagnostics to empty the water, someone the drum started spinning. So I thought maybe the empty load cleaned off some gunk and it would work again (probably a bad assumption).
I ran a load, but the machine wouldn't spin and I smelled burning/melting rubber.
So it seems the machine is physically capable of tumbling and spinning, but doesn't want to because of maybe a bad hall effect sensor. Does this make sense? Or maybe something is out of whack or stuck in there that would cause the rubber smell?
I would like to replace the hall effect sensor. My husband says he has some of these. Does anyone know the specs of this part so we couldl see if one of ours will work? And if this is the problem, would that also explain the smell?
Any help would be HUGELY appreciated!

1st reach into basket and shake it up and down. See if the basket moves in the tub. If it does you have a bad bearing. Does it make noise when you turn it by hand?

i would try replacing that first assuming you can rotate the basket easily by hand with no crazy roaring noises with machine off.

I cannot move the basket in the drum, so the bearings seem okay. Also, it does not make noise when I turn it by hand.
I am going to order the sensor assembly (about $20 from Sears) and replace it.
Thank you for your help!
