Unhappy Maytag A506 help

I recently moved, and brought my washer & dryer with me. I have a maytag A506 (left by previous resident at my last place). I'm unsure the age of this appliance and history beyond my own.

I just got it hooked up, loaded up some laundry, and everything appeared to be working fine. I put it on the regular fabrics cycle. Everything went well until it got to the rinse cycle. Just before the notch at the rinse cycle is where it stopped, and just sat with a buzzing noise. If I pushed the knob in, moved it into the rinse cycle, and pulled the knob out, it started filling with water? Is that normal in a rinse cycle? If I repeated that process and moved it to spin, everything appeared to be working normal with that. But I'm curious as to what has happened to stop the rinse cycle from beginning. It worked before I moved, and the washer wasn't dropped in that process. Any help in this area would be appreciated. Thank you
