dishwasher door problem

Today the door on my Hotpoint mdl#HDA999M-25BA dishwasher came crashing down. Usually it opens smoothly and softly, but not today. It even feels heavy when trying to close it. The door is still attached, but my guess is there's a broken spring or counterweight cable somewhere. Is this a good assumption, and if so, is it easy to replace?
As with everything else, money is very tight and I don't want to spend much replacing the washer or having it professionally serviced if I can help it.

You'll have to access and see what you can do. Remove the toekick plates (usually 2 -one overlaps the other), and see what is there, and how to approach it. I've done a couple.

Worst case scenario if it is too hard to get to, you'd have to pull out the dishwasher and tilt it back. That will set you back a couple hours.

Okay, I found the problem. One of the wire cables that attach the springs to the door has broken. Found a place online that sells them for about $10.
