Whirlpool Refrigerator, no Floor??

Just bought a Whirlpool ED5DHEXWB Refrigerator, and was a bit surprised when I took off the grill in the front this evening. I looked under the condenser coils and saw my wood floor! Is this normal on new refrigerators? Towards the back end of the condenser coils it appears to have some sort of foam underneath it with some sort of cardboard/wood holding it off the floor. Anyway, is this normal? Is this just a way to save money on metal costs?

it almost sounds like there is still part of the packaging attached.

other than that, many refrigerators have a drip pan under them to catch any drainage from the "frost free" action of the freezer.
You might want to take a closer look and then contact whomever installed it. You might also want to contact Whirlpool customer service and inquire there as well.

I saw nothing in the owners manual that said anything about a drain pan or cardboard supports. Here is a PDF of the manual if you do not have one for some reason. There is a contact address and phone number at the end of the English section.

here is another number from their website that may be of use as well:

This is what I thought too, especially since there was an electrical diagram sheet near the front.

I called both Whirlpool (who wasn't much help) and had the installer come back out. He said that the cardboard/foam thingy was insulation to keep the floor from overheating. And, the other piece of foam I saw was used as support for where the water filter is. Still seems strange to me... I wish there were pictures of what the bottom of newer refrigerators look like (especially Whirlpool), as I can't see to find any decent pics online. It would be nice to have a baseline to compare to...

My 2 yr old Maytag is the same way..prob 2 inches of room between the coils under there and the floor. Don't remember but it seems like there is some foam or something towards the back. Does make it easy to clean the lint and dust out.

Glad to see I'm not going crazy But, still surprised about the cheap piece of white packing foam used to help support the water filter. Now that is odd...
