Top Freezer Thawing/Freezing

We have an approximately 20 year old top freezer refrigerator. The freezer partially thaws and refreezes regularly. Could this be the frost free switch acting up? Is there a way to test or correct this?

It probably is the frost free system, have heard of this before. Before you do anything, explore whether the parts are available for a 20 year old fridge and if you are having someone else do the work versus yourself is it worth it considering the fridge's age.20 years is close to it's impending failure.

Is there some kind of test we can do to determine if it is the frost-free setting?

You can test for anything.

You are not specific in what the symptoms are exatly. Is there an icing problem in the freezer at times? Or instead do you have an issue with the temperature being freezing one day, and food thawing the next?

Do you have a fridge with the warm coils that are right behind the very back of the unit?, Or does yours have coils under the very bottom of the unit?

Have you put a thermometer in the freezer compartment, to keep an eye on the temp?

Answer these questions and I can get more specific where to look and test.
