What is this in my dishwasher?

The tub of my dishwasher had some big, hard, black, sticky, rubbery-looking pieces of something stuck on it under the door. What could this be? I can't tell there are any seals missing. I don't want any leaks or other trouble.

This is a 10-year-old GE machine. Should I just get a new one?

Here it is in a quart-size baggie:

It doesn't look like any part of the dishwasher to me.

Nasty build up of food debris from years of not rinsing dishes very well? Need to thoroughly clean the dishwasher by combination manually cleaning and running dishwasher cleaner or vinegar wash with white vinegar.

Does your dishwasher drain hose hook to a disposal? If so, it is could be food debris that got forced backwards through the drain hose into the dishwasher. And there probably isn't a "high loop" in the drain hose to help prevent that from happening either.

If in a stand pipe, the drain hose may be shoved too far down it and it is siphoning nasty sewage back into the dishwasher.

This is sound deadening/thermal cladding.

Heat & moisture causes it to flake off over the years.

Located inside of the door. No cause for alarm.
