Steam - Gimmick or Useful?

Going out to look for a washer and dryer today. Have heard from one person that steam is a great option to have and have also heard its a total gimmick and that no one uses it.

Is it worth the extra money to get it or am I wasting money?

I've been looking at the LG WM2501HVA washer from Best Buy.

Is there a better brand than LG?

We have a front load LG pair and do not have the steam option. I don't do much washing but the wife never mentioned she wish she had it. LG tries to put a fancy image but remember they used to be the old Goldstar appliances. While we have not had any major failures (although some minor issues I have to fix) my brother-in-law had have some big problems with them and their customer service. Maybe it just karma?

I've heard Samsung is also a good brand. Is there a better one to go look for?

I can't really say as I have not bought any appliances for quite some time. I strongly suggest picking out a model and then doing research online for opinions. A quick Google search using the model number and "review" on the end will get you a bunch of info. For example I searched "LG WM2501HVA review" and did a little looking around. Seams that that model has some good reviews. Also use it for some price comparisons. I see Home Depot has the same one as Best Buy but BB was about $100+ cheaper.

LG and Samsung are the only front loads I recommend to my customers. Steam works well if you leave clothes in dryer for a while ( keep wrinkles out) But a useful gimmick.

I just bought the same washer and dryer in stainless.
I ran into a problem with the washer but LG called today
and they are swapping the both units rather then repair.

I will admit these units are just great and so quiet.

Just wanted to say thanks again for the help. Got a great deal on these units. Waiting for them to be installed tomorrow morning!
