Loud pop/bang noise from refridgerator

I have an Amana refridgerator that is making a very loud bang noise. The noise would be similar to dropping a rubber floor mat on a hardwood floor and the mat slapping all at once. The Amana is over 20 years old and has worked flawlessy, so I am reluctant to just pitch it. Could the noise be air in the refriderant system? Is the noise an indicator of the unit's emminent demise? Simple (inexpensive) fix or a hard one?
I know nothing about refridgeration units and so I come to DIY because there are people here that know everything, and I have never gotten bad advice!

It probably is refrigerant/expansion related. Someone posted a noise-stopping remedy a while back(a few months?) on this forum. It might not work for all brands and I cannot endorse the method. But you may learn something about the theory regarding this matter - and it be up to you if you took similar action.

I currently live with the noise my Whirpool has been making for I think years now. If I am in a jumpy mood, sometimes the noise startles me.

Thanks ecman51! I found the post and the solution should I decide to fix it. More importantly your information that the popping is not a sign of a breakdown in my near future. I am about to sell the house so the fridge will be someone elses problem...if it is one. Thanks again!
