gas log won't light

My gas log won't light, the pilot stays lit, it gradually delayed lighting longer and longer until it just stopped. Do I need a control valve?

The pilot might need adjusting or the thermocouple/thermopile may need replacing. A control valve is a possibility but unlikely.

Another problem inherent with gas fireplaces is the accumulation of crud over the season. Dog hair, dust, etc can clog the primary lighting holes in the tubing. A light vacuuming of the tube area (don't suck up any decorative fluff) may help in securing a good ignition. Do what you can before you tackle the control valve.
