Washer can only wash clothes in cold water?

Hello, I know nothing about washers. A friend of mine was telling me that she can only wash clothes in her washer on the cold setting. She was thinking about buying a new washer and did. So she now how an old washer that supposedly only washes on the cold setting. Does this make sense? She said that not only did it only wash in cold water but it also overflowed out the the top. She wants to to haul the washer to the dump for her. Sorry about this being second hand info., I just hate to take a washer to the dump that could possibly be fixed. Does any of this even make sense? Thanks as always! Jack

I would try cleaning out the strainers in the hose as it enters the washer. The hot one may just be clogged with crud from the water heater, not allowing hot water to enter the mix.

Washer overflowing is most likely pressure switch bad or hose came off. Give make and model # and can help better. No hot water most likely fill valve both are usually easy fixes.
