Oven Element Question

A couple nights ago we had the oven on and all of a sudden noticed an incredible glow coming from inside. Went to look and a corner of the bottom element was glowing so brightly it it hurt your eyes to look at it.

We immediately shut the oven off. Once it cooled down, I looked in there and can see that, for about four to five inches, the coating on the element is gone.

We haven't turned the oven back on since then. I'm guessing that the element is going to need to be replaced but I thought I should see what y'all think. Also, any idea what would cause this to happen? It's a Jenn-Air oven that's about 7 years old.

Thanks.

Oven element burnt out. They do have dramatic deaths like that some times. Inner coil shorted to outer part of element. Acted like a welder for a short time. Was just its time to go.
