Kitchenaid Superba KEBC167 36" Oven Door Won't Close

Stays a bit ajar and doesn't allow for the oven to start. Apparently a condition that has existed for about six months. Have scoured on-line and haven't found much.

The gasket seems like it may be a little stiff due to buildup over the years. Hinges seem a little weak given the tension alone must hold it in place. Is there adjustments? Where to start?

As a side comment if they are looking: Kitchenaid's quality and documentation is absolutey dreadful. Only the most basic of problems are covered in any manual, and they add insult to injury by maintaining servicematters.com which does provide you info, but only if you're a certified technician and wiling to pay $500. As much as we pay for these appliances, you'd think a little technical info woud be supplied. Thank you doityourself.com to help overcoming these obstacles.

Ok - so didn't receive any help on this one, but have successfully repaired it and wanted to share it should anyone else encounter this in the future. As described, the door wouldn't shut sufficiently, with a misalignment one side. It was sever enough that the oven would not operate unless a chair or other device was lodged up against the door to trigger the switch. There is a little speculation elsewhere on the web that this is some sort of misalignment with the porcelain face front where the hinge inserts. IT IS NOT.

First, remove the door assembly per manual and instructions - door down, flip the two levers on the hinge away from the oven, and pull out when door is about at a 60 degree angle from the horizontal. DO NOT let your frustrations get the best of you at this point as if you angle or apply torque to the door in any way you will break the glass door. This is a free, value added observation. It added $150 to what could've been a $10 repair (materials only)

Second, shut off the electricity, then remove bottom and side trim pieces, exposing the two screws holding the oven to the cabinet. Remove the two screws and pull the oven forward about three inches - checking to make sure you don't lose balance - at a certain point it will tip forward. Remove other things that inhibit access to the lower corner of the oven where it is misaligned. This includes - but may not be limited to - removing the gasket, removing the front screws front the porcelain face, the side screws and rails (where the part number is). Track screws carefully as there are subtle differences. Once you have removed the side rails and the appropriate scores, you can maneuver the hinge receiver out of the corner. This will likely be the culprit. When you remove it, check for damage - mine was both bent and grooved, allowing for about a quarter inch slop. While this was heavy duty metal (compared with the sheet metal frame and sides), but it was the culprit. There is both a LH and a RH (and for some reason a couple of dollars difference in price) so be sure to order the right one.

Maneuver the new one back into the corner. It's a little tricky and I would make sure to get the screw that attaches from the front in first to assist in alignment. Put the other two screws into the receiver assembly, and verify that the alignment on both sides looks similar. IF so, reassemble and reinsert. No overwhelming insights on the reassembly process as it's fairly straightforward, but it should be fine.
