Can't find fridge for the opening in my kitchen...
When redoing the kitchen I left an opening of 68 1/4" x 36. Since I used standard cabinets I thought it should be easy to find a fridge. However, I am not having luck to find one that fits and fills the opening.
Has anybody seen fridges in that size?

Hmmm.....mine is a pretty standard side by side. Actual measurements are 35+" x 69 1/2" or so. Would need an extra couple of inches on the side or it would have to protrude for the doors to open fully.

Either. If there are 36" W then they are also taller. If the height is right than they are max 33.5" wide.
Gunguy45, would you mind sharing your brand model?

Mines a Maytag as well...MSD2641...about 5 yrs old. Same as Larry describes...top hinges are external (I think they all are?).
Unless you try to make it look like a built in... normally the hinges aren't a problem..like Larry said.
How deep are the cabinets above? Typical 12"?

destruct05,
a quick look on Lowes website... selecting 35-36" widths, and 67 3/4-68 1/2" heights shows they offer about 24 models.
You'd have about 100 more choices if the top of your 27" cabinet was set at 8ft from finished floor, leaving you a 69" h opening.

XSleeper,
Would you mind giving me an example. I can't find any on Lowes site that fill the space and still fit.
What category of fridges did you sleect?

I found some....but it depends on how much clearance you want. And how much you want to pay! Ouch...those that fit seem to be pretty pricey.
Seems easier to choose the height first, then let it show you the options for width.
Even with a 24" deep cabinet the top gap won't be seen so that could vary quite a bit.

Yes, there are some "custom" looking fridges for $4k+...
I might have to consider resizing the cabinet on top of the fridge. Doing so, I could pick up any number of fridges around $1k.
Can a mass manufactured cabinet be re-sized by a carpenter - reasonably?

As Ray says, the doors will be the largest problem, but with pix we may walk you through a modification. Some are easy, some are impossible. Hopefully yours will fall somewhere on the lower end of the scale.

I will take some pictures later.
I have a face frame cabinet from Medaillon. So, essentially a particle board box with a face frame on the front. I guess the face frame would need to be removed, taken apart, shortened, and put pack together?
The particle board box side wall have a groove that holds the bottom board. I don't know if it s glued in and could be customized.
