Kenmore Top Load Washer won't agitate, but will spin?
Hello everyone
I have an odd situation here. I have a Kenmore top load washer model 110.14222300 which i think is made by Whirpool. I am guessing it is 5-10 years old.
Recently i overloaded the washer with a blanket and ever since then it did not wash properly. One day i opened the lid and by holding a pen down on the lid switch i could watch it operate. Turns out the washer is filling with water but will not agitate at all. But the rest of the functions work as designed, it will spin just fine.
The motor sounds like it is working when the washer is in operation and should be agitating. At first i thought it was the "dogs" however i have a one piece agitator with no dogs at all. Then i thought my agitator was stripped inside but upon inspection they looked fine. When i remove the agitator the center post agitates just fine however if i press down firmly with my thumb i can stop the center post from agitating. When the agitator is installed, the center post will not turn as it seems it is not strong enough to spin the agitator.
So i am not sure what the problem is. Cannot be dogs or stripped agitator threads. I thought the transmission cannot be at fault since the spin cycle works fine? The motor is running during operation so the switches should be good and the motor coupler should be ok since it does agitate lightly and spin very well?
Could this be a belt slipping or something? I thought the agitator threads would strip before anything else more serious would be wrecked if you overloaded a washer but perhaps this is very poorly designed.
Your thoughts please

Yours is a direct drive machine - there is no belt to slip.
It's one of two things....the agitator assembly or the transmission. You've told us that the agitator does not appear to be stripped. That leaves the transmission.
My partner Pugsi will stop by and give his opinion.

You have a problem I have never seen/ I agree with PJmax it sounds like the gearcase is bad. You can Google whrilpool gearcase repair and there many sites to help rebuild or replace gearcase. Gearcase for your model have been in use for many years.

Thanks for the reply gentlemen. I actually picked up a second hand gear case and installed. However when i placed the unit upright the washing tub no longer sits up straight but off to one side. Is there a way to adjust this?

Does the tub move easily when moved by hand? if not you have the tub off the skate plate. Tub should move all directions fairly easy. Look for 4 springs under washer 3 around tub and 1 balance spring from tub to frame in back. do not lay washer on back or sides when working on it. Lean bacl against wall. Let us know if offskate plate can be tricky getting it back in place.
