GE Washer not spinning (WSSE4220AWW)

Continued from: http://www.doityourself.com/forum/el...nt-basket.html
I made a new thread because this is a different problem.

The basin won't spin. With the front removed, I can see that the belt is spinning and causing the aggetator to spin but it looks like the basin is "loose" so it is not spinning. I stopped everything and from the inside of the basin I can manually spin it. i can also lift it a little bit. Shouldn't it be held in place? How would I go about "locking" it back in place, so to speak?

By basin, I mean the inner basket where the clothes go (and with the little holes).

That would be the tub
If you're going to be fixing appliances you've got to get the terminology correct

Check out this You Tube video. This machine is similar to yours.

At the bottom of the motor is a clutch assembly. As long as the pulley at the base of the transmission is turning then that clutch is ok.

That means you have a transmission problem. I've left you a link to the drive parts to your machine. You can verify visually that they match your unit. Very simple drive system with few parts.

At base of picture click on view full size. It opens pic in a new window. Click on pic and it will open full size. Just grab the pic and move it around.

You can alternate back and forth from that pic to parts listing. The transmission is Pictorial # 320

ON EDIT:
On reading your post again. You may not have a transmission problem if just the tub is not spinning. You may need a replacement hub and hub nut. They are pictorial part numbers 323 & 325 in the new link below. Same site as above but a different view.

Your edit is exactly right. The hub is destroyed. See pic. How hard would replacing this be for an amateur? Does the tub need to be completely removed to replace the hub? Any special tools needed? Would this be a do able for a novice?

It depends on how stuck the parts are. If they come apart not to bad. Looking at what I can see it looks bad. can you get the bolt out of the top of the agitator hub and will the hub pull off?? You will need to take top off, usually lid switch will unplug. Plug is under console but has enough wire to reach. Take tub ring off (mark it so you can put it back on right first time. Looks like basket will lift out now but if not remove large nut. (left hand thread) Take hub out and replace.

parts needed 301. 310 323. 325, 313. 315 Agitator hub and bolt not needed if they come off and are good. May have to cut large nut off.It is pot medal cuts easy. Can turn into a large job of soap scum has parts frozen.
