Washer wont spin, but agitates?
Hi! I have a Kenmore 80 series washer and it recently stopped spinning and agitating and I found out it was the coupler. So I changed that and it start to work again, normally. After a week or two it stopped spinning during spin cycle, but it still agitates. I did some research and tests and this is what I came up with over the past two days:
- The coupler is fine
- The pump isn't clogged. It spins fine and drains fine.
- The lid switch works perfectly
- While the agitator is spinning, I can stop it by holding it with my hand from making a rotation forward or backwards. I couldn't do that before
- I can spin the tub with my hands with about 5-10lbs of resistance.
- The clutch under the tub doesn't spin during spin cycle.
- When I change speed settings(medium to low or to high) for the agitator, the speed doesn't change.
From doing searching I think that it could possibly be the Gearcase/Transmission, the Tub Hub, or the Belt, if it has one, and that is as much as I know.
Please help me figure this problem out. Its pretty annoying not having a working washer :/

The tub hub is a common repair item but doesn't affect the drum spinning.
A broken motor to transmission coupling could cause the problem but you said yours is ok ?
Normally that coupling will shred before the transmission fails.
You mentioned the clutch. That is also a part that could cause your problem.
Repair Clinic has a good video on it.

The motor to transmission coupling broke 2 weeks ago then I replaced the coupler. After 2 weeks of normal usage the washer stopped spinning again but this time it still agitates. Could it be the transmission then?
Is there anyway to check if the clutch is at fault? Or if I open it up, how to tell if it's needing repair?
In the tub hubs case, Im guessing the grooves and notches will be worn down?

Look inside cabinet about 6 inches from floor you you may see a streak of oil. If there you need a gearcase top seal, clutch and drive coupler. lean washer back against wall to look under it.

I recently ordered a washer spanner wrench, a clutch kit, and a tub hub/drive block. I will take it apart and replace these parts. hopefully it fixes the problem. I will report back and thank you!

@pugsl I am not so sure what you mean by 6 inches from the floor. Isn't the gearcase about 6 inches from the floor? I dont see any oil on the floor or around any components either

Look inside cabinet about 6 inches up, If a oil leak there will be a streak of oil around cabinet.

I replaced the clutch and nothing changed except that the tub is very very hard to spin around by hand now. We have the tub hub and will probably replace that too but I doubt it has a role in the tub not spinning during spin cycle.
So does the transmission seem like the next thing to replace? I can get the transmission for about 120-140

......seem like the next thing to replace ?
It would appear that a new transmission is in your future.

Does not sound like the gearcase, take basket out and make sure something has not got under it, I have found t shirts and other thing under basket. Unclip water pump from motor and pull off shaft and see if it spins that way. You will have to jump lid switch 2 wire not colored green. If sock is stuck in pump usually will not agitate or spin but I have seen it just stop spin but very rare.

So here is an update..
I replaced the transmission and started the machine and it STILL doesn't spin the tub and whats weird is now the agitator stopped spinning all together(the agitator got slower spinning before the transmission change and now doesn't spin at all).
We then tried to get to the tub hub to replace it(I have a spanner wrench) and the tub is stuck on top of the tub hub. It moves a very little bit up and down, maybe a few centimeters.
I dont know what to do anymore, but we put some wd40 on the exposed part of the tub hub and the shaft that sticks out to let it soak over night.

Basket is stuck in old soap. gently tap basket shaft with a rubber hammer, hit it to hard and will dent and chip. May loosen up and come off.

Ok so I found out that the motor to transmission coupling broke, but it broke by the metal piece in the center of the plastic spinning freely.. Which was weird considering its brand new. So i replaced that again.
After I turned it ON the tub spinned very fast and like normal but there was a squealing sound. After turning it OFF and ON to see if the squealing sound went away, the tub completely stopped spinning. I tried spinning the tub by hand and it makes the squealing sound even then. It seems like it is related to the newly-installed clutch or brake assembly. I double checked if it was the coupling again and that piece is working fine now.

I checked the transmission, clutch, and couplings and everything seems to in working order. I started up the machine and it agitated at normal speed for about 15 seconds and then it got very slow. I heard a few clicking sounds and then it just stopped agitating completely.
I double checked that the clutch spring was opposite of the brake cam just to make sure.

Did you ever get basket out? Take motor off leave wires connected, Lay on floor and try in spin and agitate see if motor works, I pretty sure it is not motor but worth a try.
Will have to jump lid switch 2 wires not colored green.
