Maytag Performa Washing Machine Help

Performa: PAV3240AWW

Fills with water fine. Loud noise when agitating on normal cycle. Noise is still present on delicate fast and slow, but much quieter and almost like a clicking sound.

During rinse cycle the noise subsides eventually and is not present during spin, and there was one occasion when it would not rinse, but I got it to eventually. There is a squeal from the brake when it stops spinning.

The belt looks fine to me, and the pulley for the thrust bearing turns fine by hand.

Please help! Is it just the (relatively cheap) thrust bearing? Or brake? Or transmission?

Thanks

You're going to need to tip machine back and remove the belt.
The front left pulley is the motor and it should spin smoothly both directions with no noise.
The pulley on the far right is the drain pump and it should spin smoothly both directions.
The large middle pulley is the transmissions and it should spin smoothly one direction---the other direction it will spin smoothly as well but it will have resistance from a spring.

If it comes to the transmission pulley making the noise then there are a lot of parts that can cause problems. The thrust bearing is just one.

Check for water leak from tub while you are down there.

Took the belt off. Motor and transmission pulley spin fine. There is a very small amount of scraping coming from the pump pulley, but it's not binding at all and doesn't seem like it could cause a noise as loud as I am hearing. Plus the noise is basically only during agitate.

Should I check the brake too because of the squeal when it stops spinning?

Thanks.

A small scraping noise at slow speed is multiplied under high speed. The motor and pump turn in one direction for spin and pump activity ...... and the opposite direction for agitate mode.

I'd say change the pump.

Thanks, I'll try replacing the pump first. Hopefully that does it!
