Kenmore 70 series washer started smoking, now it won't agitate, spin, or drain.

Good Day, I was hoping to get some suggestions about my kenmore washer. It's a kenmore 70 series, model number: 110.20712990. The other night I heard a weird noise, so I rushed into the laundry room to find smoke coming out from the lid of the washer. I unplugged the machine and came back about 20 minutes later after looking it up online. When I turn the machine on I hear a humming noise and nothing else. The washer will fill with water but it will not spin, agitate, or drain.

I checked the motor coupler after looking around on the web, but the coupler is in good shape. Next, I tried spinning and agitating the washer by hand at the coupler and was able to do that. Will it be difficult to get it to turn clockwise at first to get the tub to spin? Pulled the pump off and it looks like it was spinning when I turned that by hand. I didn't see any obstruction inside the pump. Put the motor back on and was able to get it to agitate and spin again manually with the pump off. Finally put everything back together last night and I got the machine to agitate for a sec or two before it stopped again. The washer still just does the humming right now.

Any suggestions on what I can do next would be greatly appreciated.

Lean washer back aginest wall. look under it and water pump is clipped to motor. Unclip water pump (leave hoses attached) tuck pump to left between frame and cabinet, take motor down and lay on floor. Set washer back down and put in spin and see if motor runs, You will hear it.

Thanks Pugsl. I will give it a try when I get home and let you know what the motor does.

Ok, I did what you suggested and I can hear the motor spinning. I went ahead and reattached the motor and left the pump off and tried a spin cycle again. This time the washer started to engage the spin cycle then stop maybe a sec or two after that and the motor just hums again.

cAN YOU TURN THE GEARCASE BY HAND FROM DRIVE COUPLER both ways? You have one of 2 problems, either motor or speed switch bad. Have seen either one cause your problems. If the speed switch is bad there will be voltage to both feed wires at same time, Sorry don't have wiring diagram can't tell which wires they are. Hard to check.
