Help with Whirlpool dryer

Model wgd6600vw1

Drum stopped turning in mid-cycle. I am able to move it freely, but when I first attempted to move it, it took some effort, then I heard something snap. I am guessing it is the drive belt, but I am struggling on how to open the unit to verify.

Thanks - BTW, there is a load of wet laundry standing by.

UNPLUG DRYER FIRST
Take lint screen out 2 screws under it. 2 spring clips under top on each side, use thin putty knife to push in while lifting top, 2 5/16 screw inside on sides. Front will lift up and off. May have wires to unplug. If I remember right 4 screws hold on roller panel, If belt is bnroken it will be on floor if not broken should be able to reach in and reinstall. Here is a break down of dryer

Thanks, I figured out how to open it. The belt was not broken but it was off the idler pulley and the motor. I reinstalled it and the unit now runs. I have 2 questions, however:

1) what could have caused it to fall off the pulley ?.

2) I manually turned the drum after reinstalling the belt, and noticed the idler pulley was not spinning rather, the belt was sliding on it. Could this be the problem. I was able to turn the pulley by hand with very slight effort, and it made a squeaking noise like it needed lubrication. Once I started the unit - no noise - in fact, it is much more quiet now than before.

Seems easy enough to replace the belt and the idler, but I want to be sure the idler needs to free-spin.

Thanks !

Yes....the idler pulley needs to free spin. You could try oiling it very carefully because if you use too much and it gets on the tiny motor pulley the belt will just slip.

Belt will come off if you turn the drum the wrong way, Not all the time but a lot of times. Yes idler needs to be free.

Thanks, guys

Saved $110 service call. I'll keep an eye out for any more problems.

Part installed. Purring like a kitten. Turns out the plastic wheel was cracked.
