Kemore 80 Series won't spin during final spin unless we stop/start maually

Kenmore 80 Series washer wasn't spinning during the final spin cycle. It spins, agitates and drains fine in all cycles until the end in which it won't spin.

Bypassed lid switch, no change. Replaced clutch today, spins great, but still not spinning at end.

We have always been able to get it to spin by stopping the washer and the starting it again during the spin cycle and the washer will spin the clothes just fine and finish the cycle.

Any suggestions? I couldn't find any other post that was exactly the same situation, so I wanted to ask the experts again.

Thanks,
Adam

Model number? Gearcase has a neutral drain function. After agitation, washer drains for 2 minutes without spinning. Then motor must stop for a few seconds and start again to release neutral drain and allow spin. Monitor washer during last drain period. If motor never pauses after drain, the timer is faulty. You are pausing the motor by opening/closing lid.

Eric,

Model number is 110.23822100

Does it make sense the timer would only be failing at that point in the total wash?

I should add, it seems like you can hear the motor turning, but obviously the basket isn't spinning. Open/close lid and then basket turns, which makes me feel like it should be mechanical.

I get your point about open/closing lid pauses it... I'll do some research on the timer. Thanks for the reply.

Yes, it's possible for the timer to only fail at that point. The timer has multiple cams that operate the many switch contacts that are in it. If the cam is worn enough at a certain point, it won't operate the switch as it should at only that point in the cycle. You hear the motor running because it is running. The motor operates the drain pump. When it goes into spin, it continues to drain as well. This is very simple. If the motor does not pause after draining, it's not going to spin. It's both an electrical and mechanical operation. The motor must pause to stop the neutral drain mechanism in the gearcase. Stopping that mechanism causes the gearcase to mechanically shift out of neutral.
