Buzzing noise from refrigrator...it's not cold..what's the noise?

So i have an Amana BRD18V2S so it seems to be running ok.
the freezer is cold and fridge is cold but every few minutes i hear a buzzzz sound and it runs for about 5-10 seconds then a click and it stops.

i pulled open the back and the fan is blowing. low side line seems "cool" (not ice cold to the touch) and high side is warm but not hot. the compressor is a little warm if not slightly hot. i have more experience with automotive AC systems than refrigerators so apologies if i'm using the terms incorrectly.

is it a dying compressor or something else is going on? bad run capacitor? over load relay?

aside from the noise everything seems to be normal...any help?

thanks!!!

Can you tell where the noise is coming from ?

It could be the overload/start relay but that is usually an issue when starting. If the unit was low on freon it could be going out on overload but you'd hear the compressor stop running.

That's the key.... when you hear the noise....what is happening.
Also....is the compressor cycling...... not running continuously.

it sounds like it's coming from the back around the compressor area.
honestly i can't really tell if the compressor is running or not.

ok i take back what i said earlier...the freezer is not cold anymore and the fridge is starting to warm up...it was cold earlier today...i guess something is definitely wrong now.

Ok.....that sounds like the compressor is cycling on overload or has a starting relay issue.
You'll have to pull the fridge away from the wall to investigate.

How old is the unit ?

i would say it's more or less 10 years. i got the fridge when i got the house and i've been here for about 5 years.

how do i go about investigating? i pulled the panel...the fan that's next to the compressor is blowing..so it's nice and breezy in there. also i hear the blowers/fans inside the fridge blowing.

i have a digital volt meter ready to go.

so here's what i did so far...
check the resistance between the 3 terminals on the compressor...seems to have a reading on them.
check the run capacitor and it acted normal, reads ohms for a short time and them it goes down.
the overload relay seems to be ok...no rattling inside.

can't seem to find a start cap or relay.

That is a basic fridge..... standard defrost timer and mechanical thermostat.
No control boards to malfunction.

Have you been able to determine if the compressor was running when the condensor fan was running ?

In the link below you'll see several start devices listed. One of them will be similar to yours.

yeah no control boards...i like things simple..LOL

i don't think the compressor was running.

i think the buzzing was the fridge trying to get it to start and after a few seconds the over load kicked in and stopped.

i see the start device with the cap...the start device seems to be in good shape. took it off and no rattling inside or anything. i think the compressor died this time.

i was toying with the idea of replacing it but i don't think it's worth my time.

Thanks PJ for the help.
