Thanks in advance for taking the time to help assess this problem.
I have a Whirlpool Dryer (model LER7646EQ2) front loader that is about 14 years old. Everything on the dryer is working well except the timer knob. The timer is fully functional around all the cycles EXCEPT the timer will get stuck on the last 20 minutes of the Timed Drying cycle. Therefore it keeps running and has to be turned off manually. The other cycles seem to turn off correctly.
Before knowing what parts I need to look at replacing, I wanted to see if anyone can help assess the problem. Other than my tool kit, I don't have any other parts, meters, but can buy if needed to assess the problem. The heat seems fine on the dryer. I haven't checked the back of the dryer vent from the wall, but the lint filter is cleaned out every cycle.
Thanks for the help. I'm trying to DIY if possible and avoid a repairman but will go that route if I have to.

Sounds like you need a timer. After timer stops try turning knob slightly and see if it to stop. Think you have lose a tooth in timer gear.

Whirlpool 3976580 - Dryer Timer | PartSelect
Would this be the part I need if that is the case? The timer will turn off, but I have to manually turn it to the off position. If I don't turn it manually, it keeps running until we stop it by opening the door or turning the knob to the off position. The knob does feel loose and not tight when spinning it around.
If you can let me know the part needed I'd appreciate it based on what it sound like is the problem.

Yes.... you need a timer. The OEM part number for the timer is 3976580.
Using that part number you can shop around for price as well as check with your local appliance parts retailer.
