Whirlpool Washer Grinding Noise During Spin Cycle

I have a Whirlpool WTW5500XW1 washer making a loud noise during the spin cycle. It actually makes the noise when you spin the tub by hand too. It sounds like something is grinding perhaps.

I took the belt off and spun the motor, no noise. Spun the tub, there's the noise.

I checked the diagnostic codes, and all that showed up was the lid lock fault, which I repaired and never cleared.

So, the washer has been used this way for quite a long time apparently (resident says its been going on since moving in approx 2 years ago, yet never told me). It will finish the cycle, just noisy.

Also worth noting, there looks like very small drips of rusty colored liquid coming from the bolt holes that mount the plastic belt cover. It wasn't wet, even having just been ran, but had crusty brownish drip stains on the plastic.

Any help appreciated before I go tearing into this thing. Thanks!

Sounds like you will need a transmission, It comes with a new seal (rusty stain) Not to hard of a job, only problem I had with one is tub would not come off shaft and than it gets expensive.

Part # 5 may find cheaper at different sites.

Ok Thanks for the help.

Suppose I run into the shaft not coming loose, what then?

Gotcha, thanks for the info. I'll try to put the new gearbox in and see how it goes.
