Water filter changing

We have a new refrigerator, an LG, that we've had for 6 months. It's the best fridge we've ever had. Love it.
But we've never had one that had a water filter. The front panel is flashing to change the filter.
I can change it, but those filters are 30 dollars.
I was wondering if this is an automatic warning for around 6 months of use? Like mileage on an oil change warning in a car?
Or, if there is a sensor saying the filter needs changing?
I want to do the best thing for the fridge, but wondered if spending 30 dollars every six months is routine?
Or necessary?
Thanks.

I don't know exactly what the fridge senses that makes it flash. There are so many chemicals & particles in the water, it could be anything. There is probably a web site where you can get the filter at a better price. Also, it may pay to install a filter somewhere in the line after the meter but you have to know exactly what you are filtering.

PJ can correct me, but I'm pretty sure it's based on time, not water volume used.
I wait a little longer to change mine (I don't reset the light until filter is changed). I wait longer because there is no noticeable difference in taste or odor.

$30.00 actually isn't too bad. Mine are around $44.00, but I get them for less on line.

If it's based on time, then we really have no idea if a replacement is actually needed or not.

Thanks for the replies.
I was looking on Amazon for LG LT700P Refrigerator Water Filter.
Are there other reputable filter sites you guys have used?

I sent you a Private Message. I don't want to promote any particular site.

We have a Maytag, and I changed the filter the first few times that the light came on, but did not detect any change in flow nor taste, and didn't keep track of the intervals, but decided that it was based on time. So started resetting the light without changing the filter for one cycle, and have not observed any adverse affects. I had shared this with my wife, and ironically just changed it this morning, and it now seems that we had both reset it this time, so the filter had been in place for three cycles, and still no issues. We are on a well, with a softener and whole house filter, and our water is good anyway, so results may not be the same in other locations.

I found some 'off brands' on Ebay and they look to be fine. $9.99 with free shipping.
Wonder if there's a difference.

I'm not familiar with the aftermarket brands. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if they were made by the same manufacturer as the original.

Thanks for all these comments. The water and ice taste fine to me. I think I'll wait till the next time it goes off and then try the Ebay one.
