Broken oven thermostat?

Hi All

Our oven has a problem with the oven thermostat which is getting worse. The oven often will not turn on and will require a heavy tap to the thermostat area to get the oven light to go on. To me this sounds like some loose wiring but i wonder if this is just the way thermostats die? I'm tempted to open up the thermostat to see if i see if anything loose.

Do people think that's worth it? Is there way to test if the thermostat is broken? Can i do a continuity test anywhere in the thermostat? I assume i just need to replace it but they cost $100, so if i could avoid replacing it by just tightening up some of the connections i'd do that.

thanks
oman

ps anyone know how to search specific forums?

I'm guessing this is an electric oven.

Can you post the make and model number for it. I'm sure I can give you some help.

The Whirlpool part number - RAC12-133-48
The Robertshaw part number - 9750402

Usually a thermostat of that type will click as soon as the dial comes off of off and will click softer when the oven is at temperature.

The original is no longer made. I'm looking for a substitution.

The thermostat operation.....

I know Whirlpool built that unit and the 550909G1 is an actual Whirlpool series.
I can't seem to find any part listings though.... strange.

This site may be worth looking thru as they seem to have a large listing of older thermostats. You can try to go thru and match by sight.
