GE washer trips gfi when I close the lid

The gfi tripped while doing laundry so I tried another outlet, and had the same problem. I proceded to unload it and reset the gfi. I plugged it back in with the lid open, but as soon as I closed it the gfi popped again. Any ideas?

A sudden failure of some component resulted in current leakage from a possibly frayed live wire or part to the frame (body) inside the washing machine. This is probably enough to cause electrocution if you tried a receptacle without GFCI protection. A repair of some kind will be needed.

The machine schematic diagram (probably pasted on the inside of the back panel) would come in handy. It will probably still take a few hours to unhook wires a few at a time to narrow down on where in the circuitry the problem part is.

Always label wires before unhooking them, so you are able to put things back the way they were.

Welcome to the forums.

I moved your thread to the appliance forums since the problem will be inside the washer.

It may also be a water leak..... possibly water got into the motor.
A visual inspection can be done to look for visible problems.
A meter will be needed for wiring checks.

Post the model number for me.

Post model # but yours is not a common problem. I have no quick checks for you.
