Maytag washer spins during wash cycle and does not agitate.

The washer completes all other cycles correctly except for the wash and rinse cycles it spins in counter clockwise direction and does not agitate. Washer is about 25 years old. Sounds like transmission but would like to get other opinions or a way to be sure that is the problem.

one of two problems and neither is easy. First and most common is the clutch brake and second is transmission. Here is a diagram of clutch.

Worked on washers for 15 years and never have taken one of those apart. Usually to and to expensive to repair.
